‘Road purgatory’: Application to fix Twilight zone stalls

A road in La Mesa is causing major headaches for residents who live there.

Cars can barely drive through Twilight Road, which is off of Castillo outside of Las Cruces, because its consistently caked in thick mud.

Residents say while it was a private road, the county dug it up to install sewer lines in 2008. Now, they’re left with a messy situation.

About five houses stand on Twilight Road, but neighbors said no one can reach them with out getting stuck. They told ABC-7 since the road was private, they filed an application to turn it over to the county so they can fix it. But nearly six years later, they’ve heard nothing. The county said while they’ve received the application, it’s still in limbo.

“We have people who live on this street, they can’t get their medication,” resident Bobby Gutierrez said. “FedEx refuses to deliver their medication because they can’t get in and out.”

The county could not give ABC-7 a timeline on when the application would start moving again. A county spokesman said there are a couple of factors they still have to consider, such as making sure all residents are willing to give up a portion of their property to the county.

“It’s not a county road, it’s kind of caught in the middle it’s in road purgatory,” county spokesman Jess Williams said. “Because the commission has agreed to accept it, but until the rights away are there we can’t legally go in and maintain it.”
