Part of Schuster Avenue near UTEP to close for art installation

The City of El Paso will close the a portion of Schuster Avenue near the Spur 1966 roundabout for about eight hours starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016, to create a safer work environment as crews install “The Cloud,” the City of El Paso’s latest public art project, in the center of the roundabout.

Contractors plan to shut down the two eastbound lanes from the Interstate 10 westbound off-ramp to the roundabout and the section of the roundabout that leads to the Spur 1966 bridge. Work crews will remove the barricades and reopen the lanes as soon as possible.

“The Cloud” was created by award-winning New York artist Donald Lipski. The piece involves three cloud-shaped panels covered by thousands of small steel flaps that will sway in the wind. Weather permitting, a 400-ton crane will lift the artwork at about 11 a.m. and set it in the center of the roundabout during the closure. Motorists are advised to use caution in the area or avoid it if possible.
