Former Chapin track star aiming for success at international level
The U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place this weekend in Portland, Oregon. And El Paso’s own Evonne Britton will be representing the Sun City in the 60-meter hurdles.
The Chapin grad went on to star at Penn State, even winning a Big ten title in the 100-meter hurdles. Now she’s got her sights set on the highest levels of competition.
First it’s the Indoor Championships. Then it’s on to the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon in July.
“I’ve always been a competitor,” said Britton. “I’ve always been somebody that if I see something and want it, I feel like I can get it.”
She’s not the type to let anything stand in her way – a good trait to have if you’re a hurdler. She’s widely considered an underdog. But that’s just the way she likes it.
“I want people to tell me I can’t do something so I can prove them wrong,” she says.
Evonne has had to overcome some serious setbacks, including microscopic knee surgery, which left her wheelchair-bound in 2012.
But she overcame that hurdle and now says she’s ready to run at her peak.
“I know what I’m capable of. And even if people don’t believe I can do it…you have to convince yourself before you can convince anyone else,” said Britton.
