Local group helping children with hearing loss

On any given evening the Minx family gets home, the young ones jump on their bikes, mom waters the plants and checks on the bird.

But for Carly -her world is a little different.

She was diagnosed with severe hearing loss at the age of 6.

“When I was little I couldn’t hear a thing. My mom would call me and I would go somewhere else,” Carly Minks said.

“It took her a long time to even attempt to talk and then when she started to talk it was very hard to understand,” Sherrii Minks.

For any parent the news is overwhelming.

“I was very sad and concerned for her future,” Sherrii said.

And that is where En Voz Alta steps in.

The organization not only raises funds for hearing aids for those in need but,

“En Voz Alta they provide a support group,” Sherrii said.

The group introduces parents whose kids are dealing with hearing loss to other parents, councilors and educators.

“Once your child has the ability to hear you need to teach them to listen,” Sherrii said.

The organization says children who are hearing impaired often deal with socialization and academic issues.

En Voz Alta teaches speech and sign language to children with hearing loss so they can communicate and help kids like Carly develop.

“Now I feel happy and proud but I still have to wear my hearing aid,” Carly said.
