east el paso was set to open this year, but at the last minute city officals decided to close it. that left many families in the area high and dry during these long hot summer days. stephen decatur met with city offcials about why there was a sudden change of plans, and what will happen to the pool going forward. crystal: they had the whole season to fix it and now it’s closed when everyone around the community wants to go swimming. stephen decatur: the summer of family fun planned for the pool at lionel forti park isn’t happening. tracy novak: we had done our normal preparations to get ready for this pool season, but when we went into the bath house we noticed that the roof was sagging. stephen: now, park-goers are in for a long hot summer. victor villalobos: there’s plenty of people that pull up ready to go to the pool and it’s kind of sad to see kids walking away disappointed. stephen: the pool closure isn’t all people are mad about … the apparent lack of work being done has them riled too. victor: they’ll go in for a couple minutes and then just get up and go. crystal: i come to this park a lot and no one is ever here. stephen: the parks and rec department says there is good reason for that. tracy: we have 4 million dollars to go in and essential demolish the existing facility and build it up brand new, as a state of the art aquatic facility. stephen: the money is all coming from the 2012 quality of life bond, and with so much cash on the line, the parks and rec department is taking their time to make sure it’s done right. tracy: we are going to take about a year to design and bid out, and then another year to build it. stephen: slides, a lap pool, a lazy river, a splash pad, and a toddler area are all part of the plans. tracy: similar to what you would see at a wet an wild facility. stephen decatur – abc -7 we hit another triple today – 104 – no record but it is day number 15 of triple digits for the season. an upper
