UTEP’s Aaron Jones eligible for DWI Diversion Program
UTEP running back Aaron Jones has entered a DWI Diversion Program.
Police arrested Jones and charged him with DWI February 10, 2016. The arrest happened on the 2900 block of N. Mesa. Jones was was pulled over after a sheriff’s deputy witnessed Jones swerving from lane to lane.
Online records show Jones’ pretrial hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning was canceled.
A spokeswoman with the district attorney’s office told ABC-7 Jones was eligible for the program, meant for first time DWI offenders, because he had no prior criminal record.
DWI diversion is similar to probation. Jones will still have to pay fees and his breath and urine will be monitored. He may also have to meet with victims affected by drunk driving and members of MADD.
If Jones completes the program successfully, the DWI charge will appear on his record as “dismissed.” It will not be expunged, the district attorney’s office spokeswoman said.
“Aaron’s situation was handled internally as is the case with every player,” UTEP Head Football Coach Sean Kugler said. “He has been punished harshly and I consider this matter to be put behind him. He will not be suspended further.”
