A severe thunderstorm sent out a strong downburst of winds to give El Paso a taste of what Phoenix gets several times a year – a haboob. The wall of dust and sand hit the area Friday, June 24, around 8pm. The storm produced wind gusts of 50 mph across parts of town.
Haboobs are not all that common in El Paso but we get them on occasion. Wind gusts with a haboob can reach up to 70 mph with that blinding dust and sand. The wind can toss debris and rocks which can be damaging and cause injuries, so it’s best to stay indoors. Plus, you don’t want to breathe in too much of that dust.
If you are in your vehicle during a haboob or major dust storm, it’s best to pull your vehicle well off the road to the right, put in park and turn off your lights. If you leave your lights on, other vehicles behind you may want to follow and could cause a major wreck. Wait until visibility improves before you take off again.
