Authorities say officers were dispatched after a report of a man with a gun at Chamisa Village late Monday night. Chamisa Village houses students on campus.

NMSU says when police arrived on the scene, an officer confronted a suspect and shots were fired. At this point it is unclear whether the suspect shot himself, or if he was shot by an officer. It is also unclear which agency the officer who opened fire was from. The suspect was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The officer was not hurt.

According to a tweet sent out by NMSU police, students were warned to avoid the area. They were given the “all clear” around 1 am Tuesday morning.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to call NMSU police at 575-646-3311.

ABC-7 spoke with a witness Tuesday morning, who says he was fishing with his dad and brother at a nearby pond when shots rang out.

Ochan Parra says his military training kicked in when he heard the shots and grabbed his first aid kit. He says he ran to one of the complexes with his brother and found a man screaming on the 3rd floor. He says police allowed him to render aid, and that he saw a gun on the floor.

“Cops didn’t question us or anything. I think the cops really appreciated that somebody just came to help him out because, granted he had been shot, but nobody deserves to go untreated”, Parra told ABC-7.

New Mexico State police are also investigating the incident. A mobile command center could be seen parked next to the housing complex into the morning hours Tuesday.

NMSU Police will hold a press conference in which we expect to learn more about what happened at 11 am Tuesday.
