Hudspeth County celebrates centennial
Hudspeth County residents got together in Sierra Blanca, the county seat an hour and a half from El Paso, to celebrate their first century, and the celebrations were going strong.
“Hudspeth County was formed on February 16, 1917 by the state legislature,” said John Elder, a local resident.
It’s been 100 years since Hudspeth County was formed, separated from El Paso County
Since the the County Courthouse has stood in the center of the town, now the only one in Texas still made of adobe. The County population hasn’t doubled their original count of two thousand residents in that time, but a lot has changed.
” When Hudspeth County started there were no paved roads.” explained County Attorney Kit Bramblett.
Now town of Sierra Blanca has its own roads, and I-10 running just alongside it. As the county celebrated its past, we wanted to know what could be expected for the future. So we spoke to those who’ll be here the next hundred years.
“It’s actually pretty good to be here, being young. You get to do different things, play basketball, go to school, experience the town as you can. It’s pretty cool, it;s pretty fun being a kid here,” said Alyza Fodge, a young Sierra Blancan.
To celebrate the centennial Sierra Blanca residents invite others to visit and not just drive by on I-10.
“Go to my restaurant first, go eat, go do what they gotta do. They could take pictures of the town, like if you go to that side there’s a ton of culture, like different museums. There’s a museum, there’s old movie theaters. It’s a good town to be in,” Fodge said.
