4 homicides in 24 hours; EPPD detectives working ’round the clock’

It’s been an extremely busy couple of days for El Paso Police.

As many as four homicides in the span of less than 24 hours has stressed resources. A police spokesman told ABC-7 he can”t remember a more hectic time over a 24-hour period for the El Paso Police Department.

El Paso Police found themselves at the scene of yet another murder Thursday morning, after dealing with as many as three homicides the previous day.

Here’s the timeline:

At 3:31 a.m. Wednesday, officers were called to Central El Paso when a 16 year-old girl suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Eight hours later, police were called to Northeast El Paso to investigate the stabbing murder of a 61-year-old man. Late Wednesday, another murder, the shooting of a man in Northeast El Paso on McCombs. Early Thursday morning, a man was shot and killed on the West Side in the 65-hundred block of Mesa.

“Crimes Against Persons detectives have really been working around the clock with these last four investigations,” EPPD Spokesman Enrique Carrillo said, “It’s taxing work, but their commitment and tenacity remains unrelenting. Times like these we see some really remarkable work.”

“Things happen, you know, it’s a random world,” said El Pasoan Mike Mason of the violent crime spree. “If it continues over a six month period, I would really be concerned. But right now I think it’s possibly an aberration. I’m very impressed with the low violent crime rate in El Paso.”

In 2016, there were 18 murders in El Paso. The year before that, 16.
