Teachers and staff hold memorial for Coach Archie Duran

As “Amazing Grace” filled the stands at Irvin High School Thursday evening, Arcadio “Archie” Duran’s family entered the field where he coached so many young students.

“Our coaches and athletic trainers are heroes. They will go to the ends of their earth for their athletes,” said one co-worker.

Several co workers spoke about what made Coach Duran special.

“He made our athletes believe that he could accomplish anything in this world,” said another co-worker.

In a meeting with students before the memorial, they reiterated the coach’s selflessness.

“It’s not common to come across a person you know guiding and willing to guide you no matter what your circumstance is,” Noah Daw said.

Outside students filled the stands wearing red, white and blue. A balloon read “Best teacher ever.” One sign said “You brought us courage, strive, love and many amazing memories, you are too memorable to be forgotten.”

Duran’s wife and children received flowers from the track and basketball teams.

The Jefferson High School track team also handed Duran’s family a memorial banner with pictures of student supporters.

“I believe God has a plan for each and every one of us. I believe he took Coach Duran because he needs another track coach in heaven,” said one co-worker.

Some shed tears and at times they laughed.

Students and staff walked one lap around the Irvin track that he was so much a part of.

“I will be forever grateful that he was part of our coaching community. He will greatly be missed,” said the district’s athletic director.

District Superintendent Juan Cabrera encouraged everyone to wear red, white and blue Friday in memory of Duran and his great work.
