Man, 20, killed in Northeast El Paso crash

El Paso Police say a 20-year-old man is dead after a violent wreck involving a semi at Gateway North and Ellerthorpe in Northeast El Paso.

Police did not identify the man, but identified the driver of the semi as Juan Guerrero, 48.

Police blocked off the area where a dark-colored sedan came to rest. The vehicle’s front was badly mangled.

Police say the 20-year-old man was heading north on the gateway in a Mazda 6 when he rear-ended the semi, which was stopped at a red light signal that had just turned green.

TXDOT crews had shut down the northbound lanes of US-54 at Ellerthorpe during construction overnight. The crash happened on the access road.

By 6 a.m. the highway was open, but police warned the investigation into the crash would take five hours and Gateway North would remain closed.

The investigation continues. No charges have been filed.
