EPFD provides safety tips for hikers in wake of weekend mountain rescues

In the wake of two mountain rescues over the weekend, the El Paso Fire Dept. and Texas Parks and Wildlife are reminding the community and hikers to take precautions when hiking in the Franklins.

Officials say you should plan ahead before hitting those trails and never hike beyond what you are capable of.

Also, stick to the trail because creating your own path increases your chance of injury, getting lost and destroying wildlife.

Hikers should always have a cell-phone for emergencies but also carry a whistle, mirror, flag, flashlight, flare or anything else that can be used for a signal.

When it comes to clothing, you should plan according to the weather. In the event of a thunderstorm or strong wind while hiking, find shelter.

These tips come after the fire department rescued a 69-year-old man on Sunday around 9:13 am when he fell 30 feet, sustaining life threatening injuries. The man was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Later that day, search and rescue crews rescued a 29-year-old female hiker experiencing medical issues. After the woman was brought down from the mountain, she declined to be taken to the hospital.
