Las Cruces Public Schools administration building also target of threats
It’s not just public high schools in Las Cruces: a district spokesman told ABC-7 the administration building has also received threats.
“Every time you look at these incidents or something that’s high-profile like this, it makes us reflect on our vulnerabilities, whether it’s at central office or schools,” said Todd Gregory, the district’s director of public safety. He didn’t elaborate on the specifics of the threats.
This is the first year that the district has hired an armed security door, Gregory said. Visitors must also sign in before entering any point of the building.
“We’re just stepping up our access control here just to make sure we keep everybody that works here safe,” Gregory said.
Several Las Cruces High parents complained to ABC-7 that during last week’s shooting threats, the school’s cafeteria intercom system wasn’t working. The parents, who asked not to be named, said students received no warning on the system that armed police officers would enter the cafeteria and ask the students to lay on the ground.
Gregory said intercom system might not work in parts of the newly renovated school.
“We’ve had some issues just because of the construction that you may not hear everywhere,” Gregory said. “Some of the systems may be down, but we continue to address that with the construction company.”
