Should the Land of Enchantment adopt the Sun City?

In the Texas Tribune, El Paso attorney Steve Fischer penned an opinion piece called: “Y’all, We Need a Divorce.”

“We’re ignored by the rest of the state,” Fischer said, citing a lack of representation and funding at the state level. “People don’t have a good impression of us. If they don’t want us, let’s get that divorce.”

Fischer told ABC-7 El Paso should have a law school and more educational opportunities, given the population of El Paso. The lawyer said around the state, people have the perception that El Paso is full of crime and poverty.

“Is El Paso getting its fair share?” Fischer asked. “They say we’re a big crime capital. We’re safer than almost any other city in Texas.”

But does New Mexico even want El Paso?

“It’s like nowhere in Texas,” said Peter Van Tongeren, who has lived in the state for 40 years. “But making them part of New Mexico? No!”

“It’s too big of a city,” said Estevan Fernandez, who has lived in New Mexico 93 years. “It’s too big.”

“I think we’re good how we are,” said Arely Mimbela, with a laugh. She told ABC-7 she’s lived in New Mexico for 16 years.

So, if New Mexico doesn’t want El Paso, what’s next?

“I don’t think Mexico wants us,” Fischer said with a chuckle. “So I don’t what the answer to that is.”
