El Paso City Council votes to dedicate park to native baseball legend Frank Castillo

EL PASO, Texas - From Eastwood High School to the Big Leagues, Frank Castillo carried El Paso with him wherever he went. Now, he will be immortalized in the city he called home.

City Council voted Tuesday to dedicate Frank Castillo Park on El Paso's east side.

Castillo pitched for 13 seasons in the major leagues, and won a World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

He was gone too soon, killed in a boating accident in 2013, but in the proposed park, his memory could live on forever.

"You name a park after him and it's something that all these future generations of El Pasoans will ask, who was Frank Castillo?" says Steve Kaplowitz of ESPN 600 El Paso. "And then their fathers, their grandfathers can tell them the story about what a great ball player he was."

The process to immortalize Castillo in the form of the park has been in the works since 2013.

El Paso Parks and Recreation suggested the naming of the park, located at 4960 Vincent James Street, and City Council gave the final approval at Tuesday's meeting.
