It was thought to be an oxygen tank explosion at a Las Cruces home, but turned out to be a deadly shooting

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- What was initially believed to be an oxygen tank explosion at a Las Cruces home turned out to be a deadly shooting, police said Thursday afternoon.

A 45-year-old woman was struck and killed by multiple rounds of gunfire aimed at a house in the 1300 block of Myrtle around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, investigators said. The victim's identity was not released.

Authorities initially responded to what they thought was a blast inside the home, however "during the investigation it was determined that no explosion took place, but several gunshots were fired at the home," said police spokesman Dan Trujillo.

He indicated a second woman inside the home at the time of the gunfire was uninjured.

Las Cruces Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward to find the person who fired the shots at the home, and asked those with information to call 1-800-222-8477.
