With 5 new fatalities, El Paso surpasses 2,500 virus deaths

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- More than 2,500 El Pasoans have now died of Covid-19. This grim pandemic milestone comes slightly more than 12 months after the first virus death was reported in the county.

The El Paso Department of Public Health announced five new virus-related deaths Tuesday. The pandemic death toll now stands at 2,504, with 70 additional suspected Covid-19 deaths being investigated by the health department.

The five latest deaths included a man in his 30s, a woman in her 50s, 2 women in their 60s, and a man in his 90s.

Health officials also announced 232 new cases on Tuesday.

There are 2,581 known active cases, an increase of 82 from Sunday.

There are 168 Covid-19 patients in El Paso hospitals, which marks an increase of three. There are 47 patients in the intensive care unit.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 132,686 confirmed cases in El Paso with 127,464 reported recoveries.
