ABC-7 Do-Gooder: El Pasoan uses sports to unite the community on the field

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- After his childhood was shaped by sports, an El Pasoan dedicates his time to to help unite the community out on the soccer field.

"I was picked on because I was thin, and skinny," said Edmundo Rodriguez.

He had a challenging childhood.

"Living in this area, this, it's it it can be, you know, it can get to people, with a peer pressure and, circumstances and low income and so forth," said Rodriguez. "Growing up, I was always fighting and I realized this isn't this isn't good for me."

In search of a new, he path changed his focus to sports.

"I really think, sports saved my life to a certain extent, "said Rodriguez.

Now retired, he found his passion for sports can help more than just him. Rodriguez coaches soccer for Unidos Corazon, a non profit that helps people with special needs.

"Some of these kids that are very, very timid or reserved, they want to be part of the group or they want to be part of us and they are part of us," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has witnessed growth within them. "Hopefully it's an impact in their life and hopefully transcends and it continues. And it's it's a lifelong type of thing."

Because of his efforts, Edmundo has earned the recognition of this month's ABC-7 do-gooder. The El Paso community foundation gives $1,000 in the Do-gooder’s name to an organization of their choice.

Rodriguez picked Unidos Corazon.

"It's just a matter of doing the right thing. If you think about doing the right thing, you'll know what to do."
