Organ Mountain Knights play first game since team captains passing
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The Organ Mountain Knights showed up Friday night at the Field of Dreams taking on the Centennial Hawks. This is the first game for the Knights since their team captain's passing.
Abe Romero, described by teammates, as the heart of the team, died on September 17. He had been placed in a medically induced coma for three weeks after collapsing while on the field during a game against Demming on August 26.
The community mourned the loss of Romero in a public viewing held earlier in the day at Baca's funeral Chapels.
The parking lot was full. Those grieving showed up to pay their respects. Many of them were seen wearing Romero's jersey number 22. Others wearing Organ Mountain Knight t-shirts. Emotions were high the public viewing somber and quiet.
Romero's funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 24 at Las Cruces First, 5605 Bataan Memorial West. Visitation for the funeral begins at 9 a.m. with the burial following at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 100 South Espina St.
