City: ‘Was It A Conspiracy To Conceal ASARCO’s Pollution?’
EL PASO, TX. – The city continued its case against ASARCO Tuesday with testimony from toxicology expert, Dr. Lucy Frasier.
Several maps were brought out in order to determine how far ASARCO is from schools in Juarez, after El Paso’s attorney asked if Dr. Frasier believes there was an effect on schools from ASARCO emissions.
Dr. Frasier testified that in theory, children are more susceptible to pollution, but she doesn’t have enough information to determine if ASARCO’s emissions were harmful. Dr. Neil Carman, taking the stand on behalf of the Sierra Club testified that ASARCO’s emissions “showed careless disregard for the environment.”
When asked if he thought that there was a conspiracy by State and Federal regulators to conceal alleged contamination by ASARCO, Dr. Carman replied that he didn’t. The doctor added that he believed there was simply”a lack of funding for the agencies to do their job.”
The air permit renewal hearing continues Wednesday.
