Roofing Work At LC Library Causing Bad Smells

LAS CRUCES, NM. – According to employees weird smells are coming from the Brannigan Library in the City of the Crosses.

Some employees contacted ABC-7 to complain about headaches and nausea all because of chemicals causing this strange odor.

Three employees told ABC-7 off camera they’ve had headaches on and off since the roof project began two weeks ago. So far no patrons have reported any sickness.

The odor these people notice comes from two chemicals: toluene and heptane.

According to city officials, both chemicals are found in the glue being used to repair the library’s roof. The material safety reports state they can both cause irritation to eyes, nose and throat.

Public Services Director Lori Grumet tells ABC-7 City officials say posting warning signs is not necessary.

Ms. Grumet adds, “The likelihood of you being able to ingest that and having that harm you is really very minimal. I would expect that anybody that is experiencing any difficulty would naturally remove themselves from the area.”

According to library officials, one employee already has. Staffers here tellABC-7 the womanhas respiratory problems to begin with, and that her doctor is advising her not to come back while the glue is being used.
