Residents Along Mowad St. Now Dealing With Mold

EL PASO, TX- Two weeks ago, Storm 2006 flooded the area around Mowad Street, depositing several feet of mud inside homes, now the big concern for residents is mold.

ABC-7’s Christina Boomervisited with residents living in the area and spotted hundreds of spores developing on the walls inside some of the homes.

Several non-profit groups are now stepping in and helping residents remove the mold.

Auroa Gonzalez tells ABC-7she hopes they can save her house, “We want to stay in our homes, because we are already old, what are we going to do in another place? We just can’t do it, we’ve lived her 28 years we just can’t move to another place.”

Gonzalez also says that her home, like many others along Mowad St.,has no running water and no electricity.

Two weeks after the storm, her home is still covered in mud and mold. Crews are working to make sure the mold doesn’t spread any further.

Gonzalez also explains to ABC-7 that she has to wear masks, gloves, and boots to protect herself from the mold.

She adds that coming to her rescue are young men with the Christian-based non profit “ALERT.”

They are going to each home to combat the growing mold problem by tearing down sheet rock and ripping out carpets.

John Erickson, a worker with ALERT says they’rejust”trying to give families a fighting chance.”

Gonzalez says she appreciates their help since she is all alone.

She told ABC-7, her husband suffered a heart attack after he saw the damage to their home shortly after Storm 2006.

Gonzalez adds, “The Lord will help us.”
