ABC-7 Celebrates 50 Years Of Broadcasting To The Borderland

EL PASO, Tx. – ABC-7’s 50 year history began when the station first signed on as KILT, channel 13, on September 1st, 1956.

Within a year, the station moved from south-central to its present day location in west El Paso.

Along with the changeof location, the station’s name underwent a change as well, from KILT toKELP-TV, then to KVIA in 1976

After 25 years on the air, the station swapped channels from 13 to channel 7. Add 25 more years of covering the stories that matter to you, the viewer, and here we are… 50 years young!

Thursday night’s celebrationwas an emotional evening going back five decades.

And what better place to hold such a milestone event than the Plaza Theatre in Downtown El Paso.

The night started out with glitz and glamour as guests walked the red carpet into the Theatre, and ended with smiles, laughter, and even some tears.

Outside the Plaza Theatre, everyday El Pasoans gathered to help commemorate this historic milestone and to catch a glimpse of the people they’ve grown close to over the years.

Inside the Theatre, the lights dimmed and the show began.

Those in attendance viewed video montages of the biggest news stories since 1956, an in depth explination of the station’s history and of course, some of the funnier moments.
