Heavy Late-Night Rains, T-Storms Pound EP County Communities
EL PASO, Tx. -Heavy rains pounded theBorderlandlate Wednesday night and into Thursday morning,sending rain over area roads and again forcing officials to be on the lookout for flooding.
Theheavy rains struck theEl Paso County area just aftersunsetWednesday and continued on through the early morning hours in most parts of the city. Residents in thesurrounding communities were not spared the torrential downpours either.
On the city’s west side, Glory Road on the UTEP Campus again flooded, stranding at least one motorist in fender-deep water. Police tell ABC-7 there were multiple accidents as a result of the slick roads.
From Socorro all the way down Texas 20 to Ft. Hancock, massive thunderstorms poured rains over the area, adding to the saturated ground.
Residents of a hard-hit neighborhoodalong Thunder Road in Socorro, just south ofI-10 were not allowed back into theirhomesWednesday night. Arroyos carrying water southward from thefreeway and from Horizon City again flooded their homes and streets.
Emergency crewsevacuated several families from the neighborhood to a temporary shelter on North Loop road. Residents spent the better portion of the night at the Socorro Fire station as crews continued to tend to other victims of the downpours.
North of the freeway, residents of Horizon City and theSparks and Agua Dulce colonias were hit hard as well, withnearly an inch of standing water making roads in the area slick and dangerous.
Horizon Boulevard, the main connecting highway between the suburban community and I-10 was made nearly impassable late Wednesday evening. An arroyo that runs parallel to the 4 lane road again overflowed spilling sand and mud, sometimes inches deep over the road.
Most of the overflow from the community then made its way down to Sparks and on to the hard-hit Socorro area.
In the Lower Valley, the communities of Clint, Fabens and Tornillo were pounded by non-stop heavy rain. A Fabens resident tells ABC-7 the storms started at 7pm and the force of the rain had not let up for the next 3 hours.
Within the city limits, thunderstorms rumbled over the central part of the city, again threatening low roads and streets. Strong storms over Ft. Bliss, and the Montana Street area made driving in the pouring rain a challenge.
