Miners Tame Terriers 54 To 52

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Marvin Kilgore scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Kevin Henderson added 13 points and three assists for Texas-El Paso in a 54-52 win over St. Francis of New York in a second-round game in the Black Coaches Association round-robin Invitational tournament Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

Kilgore made 6-of-12 from the floor while Henderson was 5-of-12 with three of those from 3-point range. Stefon Jackson’s jumper with 7:48 remaining was the last field-goal hit by UTEP (2-0) as St. Francis (0-2) battled back trailing by seven 53-46.

Jackson finished with 10 points. Robert Hines scored 14 of his game-high 20 points for St. Francis in the first half as the Terriers trailed 37-31. Hines’ last two points off an offensive rebound with 4:39 to play pulled St. Francis within six 54-48 after Kilgore hit a free throw with 5:38 left that closed out the UTEP scoring.

Marcus Williams scored with 3:44 left and John Gooden sank a pair of free throws with a minute left for St. Francis, but Hines drive off a fast break with 47 seconds left and Allan Sheppards rebound were both off the mark.

Jamaal Womack tried a 3-pointer from the left corner at the buzzer but it also missed and the Miners held on for the win.

Sheppard, the Terriers’ leading scorer last season held scoreless in the opening round 83-51 loss to Syracuse, scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds.

St. Francis will face Penn in the opening game of the third round Sunday while UTEP will clash with Syracuse to close out the Tournament.
