Red Light Cams Continue To Be Hot Topic

EL PASO, Tx- It’s been two months since the Sun City was first introduced to the red light cameras and Borderland residents continue to talk about them.

These cameras seem to be a trend hitting cities, with Dallas expecting 60 red light cameras soon. Butin Albuquerque, a new lawsuit says the cameras violate drivers’ privacy.

ABC-7 talked with many residents, some who say they believe the cameras are making a difference. One resident tells ABC-7,”I use this intersection a lot…I’ve noticed people are stopping at the yellow light more than ever before.”

However, another resident believes the cameras hurt more than they help, “a lot of people go through those lights and realize there’s a camera and slam on their breaks and it doesn’t give the person behind them much time to decide of they’re going to stop or not.”

In Albuquerque, three drivers cited by the city’s red light program are suing saying the cameras violate their right to privacy, something most El Pasoans that ABC-7 spoke with, don’t agree with.

“They’re looking at everybody…they’re not focusing on each individual and what they’re talking about and what’s going on in their life,” says one El Paso resident.

As of right now, there are currently 12 cameras around the city and tickets will be mailed to the address the car is registered to.
