FEMA Sends Money For Storm 2006 Clean Up

SOCORRO, TX. – Residents in the Lower Valley city of Socorro are still living among debris and damage from Storm 2006, however a grant for $1.7 million dollars could help clean up.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)has awarded the money to the Upper Rio Grande@ Work (URG@W). The money is being used to hire workers who are willing to clean up in the hard-hit areas.

Socorro resident Hilda Manley could not wait for the workers to get started. Manley’s home and neighborhood still bears the scars from Storm 2006, some 5 months later.

Ms. Manley tells ABC-7, “The water could be seen everywhere…it washed away the street it went inside homes and it was awful.”

For$9 an hour the workers will bespread throughout El Paso County, cleaning public property damaged by Storm 2006.

A total of 130 workers have been hired for six months, 100 are working in El Paso, 22 are working in Socorro, and the remainder are cleaning up in Vinton, Anthony and Horizon City.

According to URG@W’s Sydney Alvarez, tells ABC-7″Each individual city will determine what area will be receiving this makeover so to speak, or services depending on the severity at each area.”

Upper Rio Grande at Work says all of the 130 positions have already been filled. Many of the workers are former factory workers from El Paso.
