East Side Residents Complain About School Eyesore

EL PASO, TX – Some East Side residents are tired of dealing with the eyesores emanating from the materials in an on-going construction project at Cielo Vista Elementary School.

The materials being used in project aimed at revitalizing the school. The cooling system at the school is being upgraded from evaporative to refrigerated air conditioning and major portions of theroof is being repaired. However, some residents who live near the school tell ABC-7 the materials have been lying around unusedfor months.

Residents near the school tell ABC-7 the materials began arriving at the school more than six months ago and much of it has begun breaking apart and blowing into the neighborhood and a nearby park.

“We’re glad they’re fixing the school…it’s just a concern, because we don’t know why the material has been out here so long,” stated Star Hernandez, who lives near the school.

Maria Montelongo, the president of the Cielo Vista Neighborhood Association, lives right down the street from the school. “All I know is whatI have heard from the neighbors … they wish they’d go away soon, because we’re tired of the trash.”

EPISD Officials said the air conditioning project should be completed by the end of the month. However, the roofing project will continue through September. School Officials said they are working with the contractor to ensure that the site remains clean at all times and that most of the damage from the materials due to bad weather.
