Man Sentenced To Life In Prison For Fatal Shooting
EL PASO, TX – The man accused of killing a man celebrating his birthday was sentenced to life in prison.
Gilbert Vasquez was arrested last October in the far east El Paso suburb of Sparks and charged with first degree murder. Investigators said Vasquez and two others showed up at the home of Juan Antonio Guevara, who was celebrating his birthday, and ended up shooting and killing him.
It was the victim’s 26th birthday. Sheriff deputies were called out to the scene when some sort of fight involving Vasquez broke out. Originally, they found nothing and left. Several minutes later they were called back to the scene and discovered Guevara had been shot.
Witnesses at the scene stated Guevara tried to intervene in a fight involving Vasquez and was shot in the process.
An El Paso jury found Vasquez guilty and sentenced him to life in prison. Under Texas law, he will be eligible for parole in 40 years.
