Atty Gen. Alberto Gonzales Resigns

CRAWFORD, TX.-U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced his resignationMonday morning after having given it to President Bush Friday afternoon.

The nation’s first hispanic attorney general made the decision after months of criticism from both Democrats and Republicans who questioned his honesty and competence. Members of Congress have demanded Gonzales’s departure following his handling ofFBI terrorism investigations and the controversial firings ofeightU.S. attorneys.

“Let me say it has been one of my greatest privileges to lead the Department of Justice. I have great admiration and respect for the men and women who work here.”Gonzales said. The Justice Department’s Solicitor General, Paul Clement, will act as interim attorney general until a new one is nominated and confirmed.
