State Lawmaker Joins Call For Safer Railroad Crossings

LOS CHAVEZ, N.M. (AP) – Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez is calling for safer railroad crossings after the second fatal accident in a month involving a car being struck by the Rail Runner commuter train.

The Belen Democrat says state government should take immediate action to safeguard crossings around New Mexico. Sanchez says it’s not a time for pointing fingers. He says it’s time for action.

A 60-year-old retiree of BNSF Railway, John Bonney, was killed yesterday evening when his car was hit by the southbound Rail Runner train near his Los Chavez home. Late last month, a brother and sister died when their sports utility vehicle was hit by a commuter train.
