Texas Tech President: Suskind’s Removal ‘Not Abrupt’
EL PASO, TX. -Texas Tech President Dr. John Baldwin told ABC-7 the decision to remove Dr. Robert Suskind from the position of Dean was not an abrupt one. “It was a long and deliberate process that involved a lot of people,” Dr. Baldwin said.
Baldwin announced Suskind’s removal Wednesday, and the reappointment of Dr. Manny de la Rosa as dean of Paul Foster’s Texas Tech Medical School. Baldwin said de la Rosa’s 13-year tenure at the school qualified him for the position. “he has long-term knowledge of this place and was central to the formation of the curriculum.”
The announcement of Dr. Suskind’s demotion was a shock to some, considering he’d only been on the job for 9 months and he was supposed to help the school through the accreditation process.
Another surprise was the news that Dr. Manny de la Rosa who was himself stripped of the dean title in favor of Dr. Suskind will now resume that role. De la Rosa had been serving as a Vice Dean for External Affairs since being removed. The change at the top comes just 3 weeks after the school’s new president, Doctor John Baldwin, took over.
Dr. Suskind’s future at the medical school is unclear. Asked whether he had asked Suskind to stay at Texas Tech, Dr. Baldwin replied “I haven’t asked him to do anything. He’s making his own decision.”
