U.S., Mexican Governors Meet To Discuss Various Border Issues

PUERTO PENASCO, Mexico (AP) – Some U.S. and Mexican governors planned to meet today to talk about farms and water, the environment and security, tourism and the economy.

President Felipe Calderon last month unleashed harsh criticism of the U.S. Congress — calling lawmakers insensitive for failing to pass immigration reform. The bill would have expanded guest worker programs and provided a path toward citizenship for many of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants now in the U.S.

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger were to represent U.S. border states at the meeting in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Calderon, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Mexican multibillionaire businessman Carlos Slim also were expected to attend.
