114 Year Old Community Center To Be Dedicated As Historical Landmark
EL PASO, TX. – An El Paso Community Center celebrates 114 years of service by becoming a part of history andthe community is invitedto be part of its celebration!
Over the years, the Houchen Community Center has served many purposes. Now, it’s getting a new designation -historic landmark. On Saturday,a Texas State Historical marker will be officially dedicated at the Houchen Community Center.
In 1893, the center was a community hospital as well as a settlement house for immigrant women crossing the border into the United States. There they had a home and learned how to fend for themselves. The center now provides inexpensive care for children whose parents are going to school or working.
The youngest child there was born two weeks ago. The oldest is 12 years old. While the center has evolved and expanded over 114 years, director Elsie Connor says its mission is still as strong as ever. “We are interested in the social, emotional, educational and physical well being of each child. And we gear our curriculum around those aspects,” she said.
Residents are invited towitness history in the making. The dedication ceremony is set for 10 a.m.Saturday morning at the center whichislocated at the corner of Father Rahm and Hills Street.
