De La Rosa: Medical School Will Be Ready For Accreditation

EL PASO, TX — He’s on again as dean of El Paso’s four-year medical school, and he says one of his first priorities is to make sure he secures accreditation for the instutition.

Dr. Manny de la Rosa spoke with ABC 7on Wednesdayabout what lies ahead. De la Rosa used a football analogy to describe the task at hand. He likens himself to a new coach being called into action late in the game.

De la Rosa said he likes the preparations Dr. Robert Suskind has made, who De la Rosa is replacing.

Suskind was removed from the position of the school’s top administrator in September. Suskind has said the move came abruptly and without warning, but he intends to stay on in a lower capacity.

De la Rosa, who held the job as dean before Suskind’s arrival, said the school will be ready in November when a liaison committee on medical education evaluates the school for accreditation purposes.

“I have to be sure we are ready,” he said. “That is my job. That is why we can’t have any kind of complacency. You may be very confident but you can’t be complacent.”
