Search For Alleged Gunman Delays School, Closes Streets
EL PASO, TX. – It’s back to business as usual at one Central El Paso school, butWednesday morning it was anything but as officials scrambled to find a man who was reported to have a gun on school grounds.
Police were called to the 100 block of South Glenwood to check on a family fight. When they got there they were told one of the family members had left the home, possibly with a gun. Police, El Paso Fire crews and Border Patrol evacuated the home, put the family in an ambulance to keep them safe, and began searching the area extensively.
At around 7a.m.EPISD officials got a call that someone matching the man’s description may have been seen going into one of the buildings on the Henderson Middle School campus.All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders as well as faculty and staff were immediately evacuated from the school. The students were taken by bus to nearby Clardy Elementary or Jefferson High School while concerned parents stood by.
EPISDpolice took over the scene by around 8a.m. and extensively searched every building on campus, before deciding it was safe to bring the students back. For some, it just wasn’t safe enough. Classes at Henderson did resumeby 9:05 a.m.EPISD officials tellABC-7 thatfour officers will remain at the middle school, and two will stay at Clardy Elementary and Jefferson High, for the rest of the day Wednesday. El Paso Police say their search for the man continuesthroughout theafternoon.
