Medic With Local Ties Died In Attack
EL PASO, TX — More details have been released as to how an Army medic, a former El Pasoan, was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday.
Hugo Mendozadied inan insurgent attackwhile he was providing treatment to another wounded soldier. Mendoza tried to fend off his attackers with hand grenades, but he and his patient were killed in the process.
Mendoza, who attended Hanks High School until his junior year, had since relocated to Arizona. Most recently, he was stationed in Italy before he was deployed to Afghanistan.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
