‘Zero-Tolerance’ Operation Expands Scope And Reach
EL PASO, TX. – Some undocumented immigrants crossing into theU.S.nowmay find themselves in jail instead of sent home if they get caught.
The Customs and Border Protection program known as “Zero Tolerance” is expanding to the border near Laredo. It’s already in place in the Del Rio sector and in parts of Arizona.
Under “Zero Tolerance,” illegal immigrants who are caught are locked up and federally prosecuted not just returned to their native country.
They can be sentenced to terms from two weeks to six months in jail. No decision has been issued yet about applying the “Zero Tolerance” program in the El Paso sector.
