School District To Change Name Of Middle School

EL PASO — El Paso IndependentSchool Districttrusteessaidthey would pursuechanging the nameofa middle school named aftera man who has since pleaded guiltyto corruption charges.
After a brief closed session Tuesday night, trustees unanimously decided to come up with a new name for Cordova Middle School byFebruary of2008.
Last month, former trustee Carlos Cordova admitted to taking money from various companies in exchange for contractsthey entered with the district.
Carolyn Granthamwas officially sworn in Tuesdayas the newDistrict 2trustee, replacing Cordova.
Carlos Flores, who is replacing trustee SalMena,will begin his new appointment byleading a committee to change the name of the centrally located school.
“I want it to be a transparent process that welcomes discussion and dialogue from the community. And hopefully, we can move forward with this part,” Flores said.
The committee will accept nominations from the public until January.
