Fire Crews Make Holiday Safety Inspections

EL PASO — The El Paso Fire Departmenthas started tosend out crews to area malls and stores to ensure the safety of customers and employees alike, fire officials said.

The lasttwo weeks before the Christmas holiday are among the busiest shopping days for stores citywide.

Fire crews have a checklist they’re observing as they make theirChristmas safety inspections. Crewswill be looking for fire and safety hazards such as merchandise blocking sprinkler heads, locked or blocked exits, blocked aisles, inoperable emergency and exit lights, vehicles blocking fire department connections or parking in fire lanes, unsafe storage conditions, and any other violations that firefighters considerto be a danger to the public.

The inspections will continue through 6 p.m. Dec. 24.

Fire officials remindingthe public anyone can reportany fire hazards or unsafe conditions in any store by calling the fire department’s non-emergency number, 832-4432.
