Strong Winds Batter Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES — Street signs, trees and even standing up straight were some of the challenges posed in the high windy weather around Las Cruces Thursday.
The westerly chill was so strong in the city of the crosses that water fountains froze from the exposure and holiday lights were nearly yanked off their anchors.
Resident Andre Hugo, who braved the cold winds, found even riding his bike to library to study became a daunting challenge.
“Compared to other days, wow, it’s been really tough. I’ve been afraid to fall in the lane almost in front of the cars because the wind just pushes you off the pavement,” Hugo said.
Las Cruces police issued warnings for those who needed to go outside. They said avoid driving on highways if at all possible and if gusts become too powerful, it is best to pull over to avoid any danger.
Additionally, they said, use both hands on the steering wheel as gusts are often sudden and leading vehicles are not an indication of wind movement.
Officials with the New Mexico Department of Transportation say dust kicked up by the winds also decreases visibility along the roadways so they caution drivers to slow down.
