Estela Casas: Let’s Talk!

By Estela Casas

How about those Brown Middle School Bulldogs?

After going undefeated, this seventh grade team won the city championship against the Desert View Stallions from the Ysleta School District earlier this month.

These boys deserve recognition. The media, both electronic and print don’t dedicate time to middle school sports because there are simply too many teams. I did however ask ABC-7’s sports director Raul Martinez to show 20 seconds of highlights from the championship game. He showed Marcos Hernandez making a touch down.

Marcos happens to be my 13-year-old son who is a running back on the team. Marcos had a very successful season, because of his talent the coaches were able to develop. Sure, Marcos got most of the glory, but every single player on that team helped make those touchdowns happen.

The quarterback, linemen and defensive ends deserve a great big pat on the back. I truly believe the boys earned more than just a trophy they will get to place in an empty glass case on campus. You see, this is Brown Middle School’s first year so the trophy case and gym walls were bare until this month.

These 12- and 13-year-olds learned the value of hard work, dedication and persistence. They trained three hours a day, every day, after school and came home physically and emotionally exhausted. As any other athlete they too had to keep up their grades. Comparing the size of these players to others in the cityt -they are small. Yet these kids have a big heart and bigger hunger to become number one and set a precedence.

I’d like to thank all three coaches, Raul Alvarado, Gary Peden and Jason Timbrook for encouraging our football players to excel on and off the field. I salute every single player on the team who did their part to earn district and city honors. I commend all the parents who showed up to the games and worked the concession stands to support the team.

The Class of 2008 Bulldogs football team have set a very high standard for future teams and parents.

Thank you for a great season and good luck next year.
