Tax Collections Office To Take Debit, Credit Card Payments

EL PASO — Officials withthe El Paso CountyTax Office are making a change that’s designed to make things easier for customers.

Soon, in addition to using any of the three ATM machines that areavailable, residents will be able to use debit or credit cards when paying for vehicle registrations, title transfers and the like.

The tax office stopped taking debit or credit cards in 2003.

“Credit card companies ended up cancelling the contracts with the county because they were charging what was called a surcharge and the surcharge was completely in violation of the contract,” said Norma Favela, chief deputy tax assessor collector.

That stipulation has since been resolved, and the office will again allow payments by credit card.
