Jennings Nominated By Senate Democrats As President Pro Tem

SANTA FE (AP) – Democrat Tim Jennings of Roswell has been nominated as president pro tem of the state Senate.

Jennings would succeed Ben Altamirano, who died last month. Jennings was the unanimous choice of Senate Democrats who met in a caucus Friday at the state Capitol.

The president pro tem must be elected by the full Senate, once the legislative session starts. But with Democrats in the majority, their nominee is in line to win the election.

Jennings has been in the state Senate since 1979 and is a former majority leader. The Legislature’s 30-day session begins Tuesday.
