Albuquerque Mayor Endorses Clinton

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) – Mayor Martin Chavez on Thursday endorsed Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president.

Chavez said New Mexico is ready for change, and Clinton will be ready to lead from day one in office.

He said she will be the best president for working families – a constituency he said has been ignored by President Bush.

Chavez, a Democratic National Committee member, is in his third term as Albuquerque’s Mayor. Chavez announced last year that he would seek the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Pete Domenici, who is retiring because of an incurable brain disease.

However, Chavez abandoned the bid last month, saying he did not want a hotly contested primary to weaken the Democratic candidate.
