Office Of Hispanic Affairs Proposed In Legislature

SANTA FE, N.M.(AP) – Hispanic groups want the state Legislature to establish a New Mexico Office of Hispanic Affairs.

Hispanics make up about 43 percent of New Mexico’s population. That’s the largest percentage of any state. Advocates say New Mexico needs a governmental agency focusing on issues of concern to the Hispanic community.

Democratic Senator Linda Lopez of Albuquerque says it would be a focal point to recognize Hispanics and the contributions they’ve made to New Mexico.

She says it also would be a place to look to for information, guidance and support. Several states — including Ohio, Iowa and Idaho — have such offices or commissions.

New Mexico has a cabinet-level Indian Affairs Department and an Office of African American Affairs.
