Homeless Shelters Fill Up In Frigid Weather

EL PASO — Continued cold weather is filling the area’s homeless shelters. Many of the region’s homeless are taking advantage of a meal and a warm bed.

At the Rescue Mission of El Paso, workers and volunteers are serving 750 meals a day and handing out hundred of blankets. “It will be mighty cold tonight and that’s what we’re here for. To help those folks that have no place else to go, and there is a lot of them,” said Blake Barrow, director of the shelter.

“All of the beds are filled, and then we go to sleeping people on the floor. Fortunately we have carpet in the chapel so we’ll have 20 people in the chapel tonight,” Barrow said.

“With all these people, all the body heat, you stay fairly warm it’s better than being out there on the streets sleeping in carboard boxes,’ said Adrian Terrazas, who is homeless.

Administrators said they will take in as many people as they can while the temperatures continue to dip below freezing at night.
