Santa Fe Mayor, Activists Oppose Nuclear Trigger Expansion At LANL
SANTA FE (AP) – Santa Fe Mayor David Coss says he’s opposed to expanding the production of plutonium triggers from nuclear warheads at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Coss has joined a small group of activists and public officials who oppose U.S. Department of Energy plans to expand the pit production at the lab.
The anti-nuclear activists met yesterday to prepare for DOE hearings that are scheduled around the state in March.
The department will take public comments in response to an environmental review of the proposed restructuring of national nuclear weapons production.
Coss says plans to expand the nuclear weapons production are not consistent with the sustainable and peaceful future northern New Mexico wants.
He says the lab should focus on renewable energy and anti-nuclear-proliferation technology.
