Police Fire At Moving Car; Driver Faces Assault Charge
EL PASO — A trespassing call at an East Side business Wednesday night also involved an officer shooting at a moving car.
It happened at a location near Gateway West and Viscount. Officers said when they arrived they saw several drivers racing their cars and doingvarious maneuversin the parking lot. The owner of the business alerted police to the disturbance, officers said.
Policemanaged to detain about 15 of the drivers in their cars. One driver decided to speed away and that person’s vehicle barreled toward one of the officers, police said. The officer drew his weapon and fired a shot at the vehicle “in an attempt to protect his own safety,”police spokesman Javier Sambrano said.
No one was injured, but the driver faces a charge of aggravaded assault against a peace officer, Sambrano said.
Several others will face trespassing charges, he said.
